In September 2014, the parish priest found, near the altar of San Giuseppe, a significant crack with relative subsidence of the pavement. A monitoring campaign on the structure of the sanctuary was therefore prepared. The purpose of the analysis was twofold: to highlight any discrepancies with respect to the cracking survey carried out before the recovery intervention in 2007 and to verify the status of the differential subsidence of the foundations of the sanctuary. The analysis showed an evolution of the cracking picture with the development of new cracks and with the enlargement of some of the existing ones. It was therefore decided to analyze the progress of the lesions with specific instrumentation. The results obtained from the six major campaigns, from September 2014 to November 2015, clearly highlighted the need for a consolidation of the foundations of the Sanctuary. To better detail and identify the problem, it was decided to hire a specialized company to carry out geognostic investigations of the land surrounding the building through non-invasive tests (geoelectric investigations and penetrometric tests). The results of the geological campaign, which took place on 25 November 2015, made it possible to precisely characterize the land underlying the foundations, noting, in the section subject to the subsidence, the presence of land yielding with a reduced load-bearing capacity. On the basis of the data collected, considering all the possible technical solutions of intervention, taking into account the high artistic-architectural value of the structure, a consolidation of the foundation soil was opted for by means of controlled injections of expanding resin. This innovative technology has the advantage, compared to the traditional foundation consolidation procedures, of being less invasive as it does not have to carry out any excavation, cheaper and the execution requires only a few days of intervention.
